Ortho-K in Marietta

Orthokeratology, typically referred to as Ortho-K, is a non-surgical solution for improving your vision. Custom made lenses worn while sleeping allow us to reshape your eye in such a way that you see clearly throughout the day – without the need for contacts or glasses. While Ortho-K is a remarkable technology, it is important to understand that it is not effective for everyone. As your eye care center, we are your source for Ortho-K in Marietta. We can help determine if Ortho-K is right for you.

How Ortho-K Works

For most people, a poor vision comes from issues with the shape of the eye. For instance, with near-nearsightedness, the eye is shaped like a football – when a regular eye is shaped like a basketball. The difference in shape causes a malfunction in the way visual information travels to the back of the eye. Contact lenses and glasses offer a way to change the angle of the information traveling to the back of the eye so that you see clearly.

With Ortho-K, instead of using lenses to change the angle of how light enters your eye, we actually reshape your cornea temporarily. We are able to accomplish the same results without the need for constant wear of corrective lenses.

Ortho-K in Marietta – What to Expect

If we determine that you are a good candidate for Ortho-K, we will carefully measure the surface of your cornea to determine what lenses you will need to achieve the desired level of vision correction. There are several different options when it comes to Ortho-K lenses. We may have a pair in the vision center that we can give you the same day, or we may need to special order your lenses. There is also the possibility that you will need gradual correction – taken in stages, with up to three different pairs of lenses – before we can reach the desired prescription.

Once you get your lenses, you can take them home and put them in before you go to bed. Sometimes patients do notice the lenses before they fall asleep each night, other times the lenses go unnoticed. If you do notice the lenses, they should not be too uncomfortable. You will get used to them over a short period of time.

The length of time it takes to correct your vision depends on the level of correction you need. For some patients, we are able to achieve the level of correction we want within a few days. For others, it can take up to a few weeks.
