What is the iLUX Dry Eye Treatment?
The iLUX is both a device and a treatment method for one of the most common causes of dry eyes, Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). The device is about the size of an ophthalmoscope, the little light your optometrist uses to look into your eyes during exams. The treatment does not involve needles or chemicals used on your eyes. The iLUX only uses targeted warmth and a little gentle pressure to deliver treatment.
The iLUX method allows our optometrist to restore the fullest natural functioning of your eyes and the oils your body produces to protect them. At East Cobb Eye Center in Marietta, we can help you decide if the iLUX dry eye treatment is right for you.
What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?
MGD is a big name for a tiny clog preventing the right oils from getting to the surface of your eyes. When your eyes lack the protective film of moisture, dry eye results. You will feel itching and burning or find yourself excessively blinking or rubbing your eyes.
The oils that your eye needs come through minuscule openings called meibomian glands. When everything is working as nature intends, you have three layers of protection keeping your eyes moist and functioning at their fullest capacity; meibum, water, and mucus.
Sometimes these glands get clogged, reducing the supply of meibum to your eyes, or the oil gets out of balance, effectively resulting in the same thing. Age is a common factor since the number of meibomian glands tends to drop off over time. Wearing contact lenses can increase your odds of MGD, as can high cholesterol, bacterial infections, damaged eyelids, various autoimmune disorders, and some medications.
How the iLUX Dry Eye Treatment Works
Our optometrist will perform an eye exam to determine whether or not the MGD is the cause of your dry eye issues and assess if the iLUX treatment is the best option for you. If so, treatment usually takes less than fifteen minutes for both eyes.
Our eye doctor then uses the iLUX to gently embrace your eyelid and apply targeted warmth and pressure to break down the obstructions preventing proper moisture and protection. The iLUX unclogs the necessary glands, safely and painlessly. All you have to do is close your eyes and relax. It is all-natural and amazingly effective in most cases.
