Understanding Astigmatism in Marietta
When you have a routine eye exam, one of the conditions that the Marietta eye doctor is checking for is astigmatism. Astigmatism is a common condition with the eye that can impair your vision. Here at East Cobb Eye Center, we want to educate patients on this common condition. Here is everything you need to know about astigmatism.
What is Astigmatism?
The curve of the eye and your cornea is supposed to be round and circular, much like a soccer ball or baseball. But if you have astigmatism, the curve of your eye and the cornea are oblong, much like a football. This can affect your ability to see items both near and far.
What Are the Symptoms of Astigmatism?
Astigmatism has many symptoms associated with it. If things appear blurry or distorted to you, especially if it is at both near and far distances, you may have astigmatism. You may also find yourself straining or squinting to see, may get headaches and your eyes may become tired faster.
How is Astigmatism Treated?
In children, astigmatism may improve on its own and require no treatment. But in adults, the condition rarely corrects itself, and as such, treatment is needed. The most common treatment for astigmatism is wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses. If the astigmatism is severe, surgery may be done to correct the shape of the cornea.
